HackKing's 5.0

11 December 2018
We built a treasure hunt app and placed in the top 10 teams

This hackathon took place in London on the 9-10 December 2018. For this hackathon we designed a mobile app where you could compose challenges for your friends. The idea was that these challenges would follow one another – like a treasure hunt. The challenges can either be private, meaning only people with the challenge code could participate, or they could be public so anyone could join.

The main goal the app tried to reach was to increase socialising with friends, and we accomplished that by having challenges that require a group of people to complete. One such challenge could be, for example, to come up with a group dance choreography and record it in Trafalgar Square.

We presented a demo where we composed one challenge on one mobile device and then we joined the challenge with the other one. The Android app on the phone was communicating with a central server and the database via a simple API that I designed.

I really liked this hackathon because at start I did not imagine that we can build so much in just 24 hours, especially because half of our team has never worked with Android before, and we even had a non-programmer on our team. However, we helped each other a lot and managed to place in the top 10 teams at the hackathon out of more than 200 people participating.
